The Valley of Grace is the founding BioHub of the Overberg BioRegion , anchored at Genadendal in Ward 2 of Theewaterskloof Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa. It convenes residents, practitioners, farmers, conservation bodies, water users, tourism operators, faith communities, and collaborators around a specific proposition: the below-dam Riviersonderend corridor holds geographic assets, ecological services, and heritage capacity that Cape Town and the broader market now need, and no existing entity coordinates them at the scale required.

The BioHub occupies a coordination layer that no single municipality, catchment authority, tourism association, or conservation organization currently holds. Its work is landscape-scale, watershed-scale, and cross-jurisdictional by design.

What the BioHub Coordinates

The Valley of Grace holds the below-dam position on the Riviersonderend River, between the Theewaterskloof Dam wall and the river’s confluence with the Breede. This position converts demand-side catchment coordination into measurable water-yield service for Cape Town’s Western Cape Water Supply System.

The BioHub coordinates landscape-scale activity that increases usable water yield, reduces water demand in the below-dam catchment, maintains the Cape Mountain Leopard corridor through landowner stewardship, generates biodiversity data through the Guardians of Earth Nature Realm, anchors regenerative tourism at heritage sites, supports producers’ cooperatives, and runs educational programs from the Learning Hub at Genadendal.

The Bankable Service

The Cape Water Performance-Based Bond (JSE: FR31PB), issued by FirstRand Bank at ZAR 2.5 billion and listed April 2026, is the specific market the BioHub is architected to serve. Africa’s first nature-linked performance-based bond ties investor returns to verified ecological restoration. The Valley of Grace corridor contains portions of nationally designated Strategic Water Source Areas, and every hectare of verified restoration is a candidate deliverable under a subsequent bond issuance.

The Learning Hub

Genadendal was founded in 1738 as the first Moravian mission station in Southern Africa. In 1838 it established South Africa’s first teacher training college. The Valley of Grace Learning Hub is anchored at Genadendal, carrying the educational heritage into the coordination forms of the 21st century.

Position in the Global Field

The Valley of Grace enters the global BioHub field as a Finance-paired-with-Governance-first initiative in a post-colonial context with contested tenure and below-dam positioning to a major reservoir. It publishes its methodology and findings as open contribution to the field.

The BioHub is recognized within three convergent framings: the Metabolic BioHub field (152 initiatives globally), Michel Bauwens’s Archipelago of Regenerative Projects, and Benjamin Life’s emerging discipline of bioregional economics.

Operating Vocabulary

The operating vocabulary is the TIME framework (Tribes, Institutions, Markets, Emergent). The financial architecture draws on the Emancipation Architecture and the Grassroots Economics commitment pooling protocol.

Federation along the river

The Valley of Grace is a single BioHub for the Riviersonderend downstream of the Theewaterskloof Dam and upstream of Swellendam [MS]. It engages with the BioHubs upstream of the dam and downstream of Swellendam, such as the anticipated Witsand BioHub at the Breede estuary, as a federation [MS]. In the terms of the BioConomy wiki, each BioHub in the federation carries the Bioregional Development Organization functions for its own reach of the river, and the BioHubs federate across the Overberg BioRegion through shared infrastructure and reconciled Terms of Engagement. The Overberg Charter will record the arrangement when the founding cohort produces it.

The Overberg BioRegion

The Valley of Grace operates within the Overberg BioRegion. The BioRegion wiki holds the shared infrastructure:
