Valley of Grace BioHub

The Valley of Grace is the founding BioHub of the Overberg BioRegion, anchored at Genadendal in Ward 2 of Theewaterskloof Municipality. It entered the global BioHub field through a Finance-and-Governance-first pathway, aligning to the Cape Water Performance-Based Bond (FR31PB) before building out programme delivery.

Position

The Valley of Grace holds the below-dam position on the Riviersonderend River, between the Theewaterskloof Dam wall and the river’s confluence with the Breede. This position converts demand-side catchment coordination into measurable water-yield service for Cape Town’s Western Cape Water Supply System.

Services

The BioHub’s services portfolio covers water yield through below-dam catchment restoration, biodiversity data through Cape Mountain Leopard corridor monitoring and iNaturalist citizen science, heritage-and-tourism through the Leopard Corridor Destination Management Plan and the Genadendal Learning Hub, food systems through the Genadendal Saturday Market, and coordination-as-employment through the Ward 2 Business Forum.

Key Instruments

The primary financial instrument is the Cape Water Performance-Based Bond (FR31PB), with the Overberg below-dam tranche in development. Complementary funding pathways include the Globeleq Klipheuwel Wind Farm co-funding programme and mycelial patronage architecture.
