Identity Statement
Status: Draft. To be finalised through the BioHub Identity Template three-prompt sequence with the founding cohort.
Name
Valley of Grace BioHub.
The name anchors the entity in the valley of the Riviersonderend River below the Theewaterskloof Dam, centred on Genadendal (literally “Valley of Grace”), and positions it within the global BioHub field as documented in Gladek et al. (2026). The BioHub operates within the Overberg BioRegion. Address: https://biohubs.bioconomy.earth/afrotropic/at12-vog.
Founding Cohort
[To be populated after formal template run with the cohort.]
Coordinator: Michael Haupt, independent community coordinator, unaffiliated by design.
Anchor Location
Genadendal, Ward 2, Theewaterskloof Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa. Founded 1738 as the first Moravian mission station in Southern Africa; in 1838, the site of South Africa’s first teacher training college. The Learning Hub at Genadendal carries the educational heritage into 21st-century coordination forms.
Purpose
The Valley of Grace BioHub coordinates landscape-scale activity that:
- Increases usable water yield through the four Water Retention Landscape mechanisms
- Reduces water demand in the below-dam catchment
- Maintains the Cape Mountain Leopard corridor through landowner stewardship
- Generates biodiversity data through the Guardians of Earth Nature Realm
- Anchors regenerative tourism at heritage sites and along the corridor
- Supports producers’ cooperatives across Ward 2
- Runs educational programmes from the Learning Hub
Each activity stream generates value no individual actor captures alone. The BioHub is the coordination layer through which pooled commitments become bankable services.
Position Within the Field
The Valley of Grace enters the global BioHub field as a Finance-paired-with-Governance-first initiative, which the Metabolic paper names as the field’s highest-leverage underdeveloped area. Its substrate work through the Emancipation Architecture (ZA-FiCom, the BCU/ZA3 unit of account, commitment pooling with ecological backing, Mycelial Patronage) distinguishes it from the (+T+I+M)^+N pattern documented across the 152-initiative Metabolic repository.
Three convergent framings position the BioHub:
- The Metabolic BioHub field — Finance-and-Governance entry, contributing through open publication
- The P4P Archipelago — Michel Bauwens cites the coordinator’s work in his 16 August 2026 P4P essay, situating the BioHub as one instantiation of the coordination infrastructure the commons movement calls for
- The bioregional economics discipline — Benjamin Life’s Part I (3 August 2026) closes with the missing-middle institutional question; the Valley of Grace positions as a live answer
Intellectual Lineage
See Field and Lineage Positioning for the full reference.
Core frameworks: Ronfeldt’s TIMN/TIME, Ruddick’s Grassroots Economics and commitment pooling, Ostrom’s design principles and polycentricity, the Water Retention Landscape tradition (Kravčík, Jehne, Holzer, Weiss, Singh, Liu, Yeomans, Andrews, Millison), the Cape-specific evidence base (Van Wilgen, Le Maitre, Mills, Cowling, Van Wyk, Dzikiti), the Emancipation Architecture (Cox and Haupt), Bauwens’s cosmo-local production and P4P framing, Life’s bioregional economics, Power and Seefeld’s Bioregional Financing Facilities, Brewer’s Design School for Regenerating Earth.
Entity Form
Recommended stacked entity structure (pending legal opinion):
- Non-Profit Company (NPC) as convening entity
- Primary Cooperative as producers’ vehicle
- Operating company (Pty Ltd) for revenue-generating activity, mission-locked through NPC shareholding
- Trust or CPA forms where land is held
The operating logic is the federated cooperative pattern: cooperatives cooperating, jointly capitalised shared infrastructure held by the federation.
Three inherited constraints: no new financial obligations on any municipality; free and open membership; all content published under open licence unless client-confidential.
Forward Relationship to the BioRegion
The Valley of Grace is the founding BioHub within the Overberg BioRegion. The BioRegion’s formal establishment follows through the BioRegion Establishment Template. Additional BioHubs are anticipated at Volmoed and Witsand.
