Field and Lineage Positioning
Status: Draft. To be expanded through the BioHub Identity Template Prompt 2 (evidence pack) with the founding cohort. The full document is expected to run 30-50 pages. This draft captures the structure and key content from the Founding Brief.
1. Global Field Mapping
The global BioHub field, assessed across the 152-initiative Metabolic repository (Gladek et al. 2026), currently operates as triform coordination with a network overlay: (+T+I+M)^+N in Ronfeldt notation. [IC — Gladek et al. 2026]
The Valley of Grace enters the field with a stated intention to move beyond that condition through Finance-paired-with-Governance work drawing on the Emancipation Architecture and Mycelial Patronage. [MS]
Two case studies most directly relevant for comparative work: Kwaxala (purchase and retirement of extraction rights, structured as Living Forest Shares) and Centree (unit of exchange backed by standing forest). Both are Layer 3 items in the Metabolic architecture and the closest available precedents for the Emancipation Architecture’s substrate work. [MS]
2. Intellectual Lineage
2.1 Core Frameworks
-
Ronfeldt’s TIMN/TIME model. David Ronfeldt, Tribes, Institutions, Markets, Networks, RAND P-7967, 1996. The TIME variant (replacing +N with +E) is the coordinator’s adaptation, introduced in the October 2025 Substack series. [IC — Ronfeldt 1996; MS — TIME adaptation]
-
Ruddick’s Grassroots Economics. Will Ruddick, Grassroots Economics: Reflection and Practice, 2025. Commitment pooling protocol. [IC — Ruddick 2025]
-
Ostrom’s design principles and polycentricity. Elinor Ostrom, Governing the Commons, 1990. Polycentricity gets stronger at Overberg BioRegion scale than at Ward scale: the Overberg has four local municipalities, one district municipality, one catchment management agency (Breede-Gouritz), one mountain catchment authority (CapeNature), one water user association (ZWUA), and multiple conservation and tourism bodies. [IC — Ostrom 1990; MS — Overberg application]
-
Water Retention Landscape tradition. Kravčík et al. (2007), Jehne (Soil Carbon Sponge), Yeomans (Keyline Design), Holzer, Weiss, Singh (Tarun Bharat Sangh), Andrews (Natural Sequence Farming), Liu (Loess Plateau), Millison. The operational science of catchment restoration. [IC — multiple sources]
-
Cape-specific evidence base. Van Wyk (1987): 55% streamflow reduction in fynbos catchments 23 years after pine infestation. Le Maitre et al. (2019): current invasions reduce WCWSS assured yield by ~38 million m³/year, rising to ~130 million m³/year in 45 years without clearing. [IC — peer-reviewed]
-
The Emancipation Architecture. Developed with Michael Cox. ZA-FiCom financial architecture (three-phase financial commons). [MS]
2.2 The P2P Foundation and Cosmo-Local Tradition
Michel Bauwens and the P2P Foundation. Cosmo-local production, P4P federation frame (Jeff Emmett), reverse cooptation, transvestment, seed forms and germ form theory, Value Sovereignty, the Reconstruction Paradigm, and the Archipelago of Regenerative Projects. [IC — Bauwens August 2026]
Sacha Pignot on fractal sovereignty: hyper-local, bioregional, cosmo-local. [IC — cited in Bauwens August 2026]
Benjamin Life on bioregional commoning and Upward Spiral Economics. [IC — Life August 2026]
2.3 The Bioregional Economics Discipline
Life defines the discipline as “the study and practice of designing regenerative, closed-loop, cooperatively owned, place-based economies within the carrying capacity of their landscapes.” [IC — Life Part I, 3 August 2026]
Additional lineage: Fullerton (Capital Institute), Landua and Roland (Eight Forms of Capital), Ibarra (Holochain/MetaCurrency), Raworth (Doughnut Economics), Eisenstein (Sacred Economics), Twist (Soul of Money), Power and Seefeld (Bioregional Financing Facilities), Brewer and Heiple (Design School for Regenerating Earth). [IC — multiple sources]
Field ancestors: Schumacher, Daly, Meadows, Berry, Ostrom. [IC]
2.4 The Coordinator’s Published Work
- “Mycelial Consciousness” (April 2025) — the fifth Cognitive Major Evolutionary Transition
- “The Cheapest Available Behavior” (April 2026) — substrate hypothesis and TIMN-mycelial overlay
- “Mycelial Patronage: The (R)evolution Will Be Funded” (July 2026) — funding architecture
- “Sawalmem: Watershed Governance” (16 August 2026) — below-dam positioning and FR31PB engagement
3. Research Base
[To be expanded. Draws from the project’s research briefs: Riviersonderend Water Scheme, Ward2 Bioprecipitation, Corporate Partnerships, Pooling Across TIMN, Greyton Commonage, Farm 39 Transformation History, and others in the project knowledge base.]
4. Entity Precedents
[To be expanded. Mondragón federated cooperative, Patagonia Purpose Trust/Holdfast Collective transfer, Bioregional Financing Facilities phased architecture, the Mafube Business Forum precedent, and the Municipal Exits register.]
5. Specific Field Contribution
The Valley of Grace’s contribution across all three framings: the case study of a Finance-and-Governance-first, Mycelial-Patronage-holding, cosmo-local, federated-cooperative BioHub anchored in a post-colonial context with contested tenure, operating below a major reservoir supplying a metropolitan area of four million people, publishing methodology as open contribution. [MS]
6-10. [Sections to be populated through Prompt 2]
Sections 6-10 (Patronage Architecture Analysis, Cohort Formation, Multi-BioHub Coordination Protocols, Tension Register, Synthesis) to be generated through the formal Identity Template Prompt 2 with the founding cohort.
